Ensure ELLs academic success with on-level math curriculum
Developed especially for English Language Learners in grades 3, 4, and 5. These grades are where most ELLs are exited from BE/ESL/ESOL programs. Many have acquired conversational language but not the academic language required to be successful in everyday classroom activities.
Math isn’t all numbers. ELLs have to learn everyday English, mathematical English, and new math content all at the same time. Cultural differences can also affect math achievement.
How can you know if the problem is math or language?
The Academic Language Notebooks: The Language of Math helps young ELLs at the
intermediate and advanced levels of English language proficiency learn and practice the essential math language and concepts these students need to succeed.
- Teaches the essential academic language of the grades 3, 4, and 5 math curriculum
- Works in all programs where ELLs are enrolled
- Modularized and non-sequential—any module can be used as needed
- Designed for educators with varying levels of exposure to ELLs
- Builds ELL professional development into every lesson
- Utilizes six research-based ELL Best Practices
- Correlated to the most common math textbooks—easily supplement your existing curriculum
- Features a unique Student Learning System that becomes a personalized resource for ELLs and a portfolio of student progress for teachers
Student Learning System
Student Worktext
The Student Worktext is at the core of the Student Learning System. Each Student Worktext includes 30 modules tied to topics in the math curriculum.
As students finish each lesson of a module, they organize the completed Student Worktext pages, along with their additional work and notes, into their Academic Language Notebook (ALN) three-ring binder.
Student Vocabulary Cards
The Student Vocabulary Cards provide space for each student to write examples, make notes, create their own definitions, and draw. There are vocabulary cards for each of the 30 modules
in ALN, approximately 180 per grade level.
Student Binder
The three-ring binder for each student includes tabs and notebook paper for the modules. This encourages students to create a portfolio of their work and to practice learning skills along with academic language.
